One of the most beautiful things about travel is there is truly no right or wrong way to approach it. Do you like to go off the grid for months at a time, or are you all about short and frequent jaunts? Are you about beaches or bustle? Travel is whatever it means to you!
My travel style is bit all over the place. I find perhaps no greater joy in the world than a five-star hotel — nor an epic campsite. I love upper-class cabins and puddle jumpers that vibrate and rattle suspiciously. (That’s how you know you’re alive, right?) I’m all about tropical islands, but OK, I’ll accept an itinerary without a beach (as long as the shopping is good).
It’s been fun to reflect on all these preferences and personal travel style choices since blogger Johnny Jet — check out all of his amazing travel tips BTW — asked me to contribute to his “Travel Style” section. The popular Q&A part of the site asks celebrities and travel media types to share a little about themselves and their travel habits. I was honored to be asked to share, and here’s an excerpt of what I came up with. (Read the full interview here.)
Alesandra Dubin Travel Style
Favorite American city: Palm Springs
Favorite international city: Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, Rio
Country with the meanest immigration officers: France (also the only country whose officers forced me to go through the metal detector without offering a wanting alternative when I was pregnant)
Favorite airline: Turkish, British, Avianca. But possibly the most fun I ever had on an airline was puddle jumping around Belize by way of Tropic Air — with just my husband and me on several (de facto private) flights, one of us always got to call shotgun and ride up front with the pilot.
Favorite hotel: Four Seasons Bali at Sayan (Ubud, Bali), Viceroy Bali (Ubud, Bali), Hilton Bora Bora Nui (Bora Bora), Korakia Pensione (Palm Springs), Jake’s (Jamaica), St. Regis Punta Mita (Punta Mita, Mexico)
Favorite travel credit card: United MileagePlus Explorer
Favorite island: Mykonos, Santorini, Bali, Bora Bora, Moorea, Ambergris Caye… all of my favorites are islands!
Favorite beach: Psarou Beach (Mykonos)… and Nammos Beach Club there!
Favorite travel movie(s): Wait for it: Couples Retreat! I want to sop up those Bora Bora landscapes with a biscuit.
Favorite travel show(s): Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown
What do you like least about travel? Jet lag
Most embarrassing travel moment: The summer we studied abroad in Italy, my sister and I hopped a train to see [redacted quintessential ‘90s riot grrrl performer]… but we made it to the wrong place; we’d had the town’s name off by one letter. As I recall, we did reach the musician by phone at her hotel and told her we were sorry to miss her show — as if she cared.
Worst travel moment: I chalk all travel moments up to tiny jewels. But the one time our flight to Barcelona was cancelled, so we had to rebook through Istanbul and way overshoot our destination, creating a 24-hour haul when I was pregnant with my twins — well, that was no fun.
What’s your dream destination? Maldives, Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania
Best travel tip: JUST GO.
